Works by touching the skin of the smartphone by hand. Why doesn't it work when touched by something else?

Most of the touch screens of smartphones are capacitive touch screens. Which is very expensive, and can detect multitouch.

Touch is usually of 2 types

  1. Capacitive touch
  2. Resistive touch

Capacitive touch screen:

Capacitive touch screen is a coated glass panel of material capable of holding electrical charge. It holds electrical charge. We know that the human body can hold electrical charges. When a human finger touches any part of the capacitive touch screen, some of the charge of that place is reduced as it is transferred to the finger. The special circuit connected to the touch screen can understand exactly where the charge has decreased. The circuit informs the system of the location of that place. And the system executes the command at the touch of a finger. Capacitive touch screens are commonly used in Apple's iPhone, iPad, etc. The advantages / disadvantages of capacitive touch screen are as follows:

■ Advantages:

  • Extremely touch sensitive.
  • Multitouch means it can detect the touch of multiple points simultaneously.
  • Bright sunlight and the display looks good.
  • The touch system is not affected by dust.
  • Smooth and glossy display.

Difficulty:

  • The fingers must have at least 5 percent humidity for the touch to work.
  • Expensive compared to resistive touch screen.
  • Electricity does not work with conductive objects. Such as: nails, gloves etc.
  • There is a lot of development to be done with this new technology.

Resistive touch screen:

A resistive touch screen is a three-tiered glass panel. Two of these levels are conductive and resistive. The third and upper layers basically protect the other two layers from scratches. When the human finger touches any part of the resistive touch screen, there is a connection between the conductive and the resistive levels. As a result, the flow of electricity in that place varies. Which the special circuit connected to the touch screen can understand exactly where the power flow has varied. The circuit informs the system of the location of that place. And the system executes the command at the touch of a finger. The previous Nokia Touch phones usually used a resistive touch screen. The advantages / disadvantages of resistive touch screen are as follows:

■ Advantages:

  • Relatively cheap.
  • Can be used by any object. Such as: pens, stylus, nails etc.
  • Can work on any moisture on the fingers. He even works while wearing gloves.

Difficulty:

  • Multitouch means cannot detect the touch of multiple points simultaneously. However, research is ongoing.
  • The touch system is affected by dust.
  • Enough pressure has to be applied to the touch, so there is a fear of breaking.
  • There is a possibility of loss of efficiency as a result of scratching.
